There is an urban legend, or in this case rural, that George Vanderbilt wanted to build his estate in Tazewell County, Va. He couldn't come to an agreement with the owner of Burkes Garden so he moved to the French Broad Valley.
Ive researched George W Vanderbilts life almost day by day for 20 years now. He visited Burkes Garden with his wife about 5 years after Biltmore was completed. He may have tried to purchase some land then. He had land in 5 states. He also had a huge estate in Bar Harbor where he spent his summers and the spring in Paris. We have a Biltmore History Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BiltmoreEstate/
